Building a Standalone Spa (No Pool) in Arizona — Cost, Timeline, and Why

Investment range

A custom in-ground spa runs $35K–$75K depending on size, finish, jet count, and deck. Roughly half the investment of a pool, double the year-round use.

Build timeline

4–8 weeks total from contract to first soak — about half a pool's timeline. Same trades, smaller scale.

Equipment

Dedicated heater (gas or electric heat pump), variable-speed pump, salt or chlorine sanitization, automation. Heat pump is the play in AZ — slow heat-up but $40/month operating cost versus $200+ for gas.

Year-round use

AZ winter nights are spa season. A 102° spa under a louvered pergola with patio heaters and string lights is the most-used backyard feature most clients build.
