Outdoor kitchen ideas

Outdoor kitchen ideas built for Arizona — not Pinterest.

Phoenix and Scottsdale backyards demand outdoor kitchens that survive 115° summers, monsoon rain, and ten years of weekend entertaining. These are the layouts, materials and shade strategies we actually build — from compact courtyard galleys to full pool-side command kitchens.

Six layouts that work

Pick the shape, then the features.

L-shaped cook + bar

Cook line on one leg, raised bar seating on the other. Best for medium yards where you want guests close but not in the heat path.

U-shaped command kitchen

Grill, side burner, sink and prep zones across three walls. The serious entertainer setup — works under a pergola or ramada.

Island with pizza oven

Free-standing island built around a wood-fired or gas pizza oven. Anchors the patio and pulls people outside on weekends.

Pool-side swim-up bar

Sunk bar seating in the shallow end with a counter built into the deck. Resort feel without leaving home.

Shaded ramada kitchen

Full outdoor kitchen tucked under a structural ramada with fans and lighting — usable from May through October.

Compact courtyard galley

Single-wall grill + counter + mini-fridge for small backyards and casitas. 8–10 linear feet and you're entertaining.

Materials

What actually holds up in the Phoenix sun.

Stone or stucco bases

Steel-stud framed, stucco or stacked stone veneer over CMU. No wood — termites, monsoon water and 115° heat ruin framed kitchens fast.

Porcelain or granite counters

Porcelain handles UV without fading; granite stays cool under shade. Skip butcher block and most quartz — Arizona sun yellows resin binders.

304 stainless appliances

Built-in grills, side burners, fridges and drawers in 304 stainless. Lower grades pit and rust within a couple monsoon seasons.

Real shade overhead

Pergola with a solid louvered or wood top, or a structural ramada. Lattice and shade sails extend the season but won't make July noon usable.

Pool-side kitchen ideas

Cook where the party already is.

  • Swim-up bar with submerged stools and a counter flush to the pool deck
  • Cook station angled toward the pool so the grill master faces the swimmers
  • Built-in cooler drawers within reach of pool loungers
  • Pizza oven + fire feature combo as the visual anchor opposite the pool
Small backyard kitchen ideas

Big function, 8 linear feet.

  • Single-wall galley along the back fence with a 36" grill, side burner and 8 ft of counter
  • L-shape tucked into a corner so the patio stays open for a dining table
  • Built-in bar countertop on the back of the kitchen so it doubles as seating
  • Stacked cabinets and a beverage fridge instead of a full outdoor refrigerator
