Small backyard ideas

Small backyard ideas that live big.

Phoenix lots are getting tighter and HOAs are getting tougher. These are the layouts, pools, kitchens and shade strategies we use to turn 400–800 sq ft of Arizona backyard into a resort that actually entertains 20 people.

Six principles

Make every square foot work twice.

One hero, not five

Pick one anchor — plunge pool, fire feature, or kitchen — and let the rest of the yard support it. Small yards die from too many competing focal points.

Build up, not out

Vertical privacy screens, climbing vines and tall planters add depth without stealing floor space. The yard feels twice as big.

Plunge over full pool

10×20 plunge or cocktail pool fits where a full pool can't — and still cools you off in July. Add a spa shelf and you've got year-round use.

Built-in seating, no chairs

Bench seating along the perimeter frees the middle of the patio and seats more people than freestanding furniture ever could.

Multi-use features

Fire pit doubles as a coffee table. Kitchen counter doubles as a bar. Pool wall doubles as bench seating. Every surface earns its keep.

Layered lighting

Path lights, uplit trees, pool glow and permanent trim lighting make a small yard feel cinematic at night — and bigger than it is.

Layout ideas

Five layouts we actually build.

  • Plunge pool against the back fence with a paver patio and built-in bench wrapping two sides
  • Pergola over an L-shaped outdoor kitchen on one side, a fire pit lounge on the other
  • Travertine patio across the full yard with a Baja shelf spa as the centerpiece
  • Artificial turf zone for kids/pets plus a paver entertaining patio — divided by a low planter
  • Casita-style courtyard with a galley kitchen, raised dining patio and string lighting overhead
Avoid these

Small-yard mistakes we keep fixing.

  • ×Standard 14×28 pool that leaves zero patio — the yard becomes a wet driveway
  • ×Bulky furniture sets that block sightlines and shrink the space visually
  • ×Three different paver patterns competing in 600 sq ft
  • ×Full-shade pergola that blocks every winter sun ray you actually want in January
  • ×No lighting plan — the yard disappears at 7pm
