Pet-Safe Artificial Turf — What Dog Owners Need to Know

The system, not just the turf

Pet-safe means three things working together: high-flow backing, antimicrobial infill (zeolite is the gold standard), and a properly drained sub-base. Skip any one and you'll have a urine smell by month 3.

Install differences for dogs

  • Sub-base: 4" of compacted decomposed granite for drainage — not 2".
  • Backing: punched drainage every 4" minimum.
  • Infill: zeolite-only or zeolite/sand blend, applied at 1.5 lbs/sq ft.
  • Seams: glued AND nailed every 6".
  • Pile: 1.5" — easier to rinse than longer fibers.

Maintenance

Hose down weekly, enzyme cleaner (Simple Green Outdoor Odor or PE-51) monthly. Don't use bleach — it degrades the backing. Brush against the grain quarterly to keep fibers standing up.
