Glass vs mesh vs wrought iron vs aluminum pool fence.

These are the four materials Arizona homeowners actually choose between for a pool perimeter. They are separated by roughly an order of magnitude in installed cost, and by one thing most people underestimate: what the fence does to the view they paid for. Here is the honest comparison, with published ranges.

The honest version: AE installs glass, and glass is the most expensive of the four. It earns that on exactly one axis — the sightline — plus a lower refinishing burden over time. If your fence line faces a block wall, aluminum or iron does the same barrier job for a fraction of the spend, and we will say so on the walk. Mesh is the right call when the barrier needs to exist now or the arrangement is temporary. Whichever material you choose, the barrier requirements have to be confirmed with the applicable municipality or AHJ for your specific property, and no fence, gate or barrier replaces active adult supervision — keep an undistracted adult Water Watcher on duty whenever children are in or near water.

Installed cost per linear foot (Arizona planning ranges)

  • Removable mesh: ~$18–$28 per linear foot.
  • Powder-coated tubular aluminum: ~$65–$110 per linear foot.
  • Wrought iron: from ~$140 per linear foot.
  • Frameless glass: generally $225–$325 per linear foot.
  • Gates, specialty glass systems, upgraded glass and custom hardware are quoted separately after the layout and specifications are confirmed. Footing work, where an approved structural detail requires it, is an add-on — typically $75–$100 per linear foot in open or new areas, or $110–$125 per linear foot where pavers, turf or similar finish must be removed and reinstalled.

View impact — the axis that decides most projects

  • Glass: keeps the sightline open. From inside the house you see pool, yard, mountain and sky with no repeating line across them.
  • Aluminum and iron: both put a vertical picket rhythm across every sightline. From a seated position inside, that line is more noticeable than people expect.
  • Mesh: a translucent woven panel on posts. It softens the view rather than blocking it, but it reads as a barrier, not as finish work.
  • This is the one difference no amount of budget shifting changes after the fact.

How each holds up in the desert

  • Wrought iron: corrosion shows first at welds, post bases and fasteners. Timing depends on the finish system (bare, powder-coated, galvanized-then-coated), irrigation and pool exposure, and touch-up discipline.
  • Powder-coated aluminum: does not rust the way steel does, though corrosion behavior still depends on the alloy, coating, fasteners and exposure. Color hold in direct south and west sun depends on the coating and the manufacturer's finish warranty.
  • Mesh: a woven textile system. UV exposure, pool chemicals and repeated removal and reinstallation drive service life, which the manufacturer documents.
  • Glass: panels are not a ferrous or painted product, so they weather differently than a metal finish. The serviceable parts are the spigots, gaskets and gate hardware.
  • For all four, expected life and coverage come from the manufacturer documentation and the warranty terms in your signed scope.

Maintenance you will actually do

  • Glass: cleaning is the routine task — hard water spotting is the real Arizona issue, not structural upkeep. Hardware is inspected periodically.
  • Iron: periodic touch-up and eventual refinishing, especially at bases and welds sitting in overspray or irrigation.
  • Aluminum: washing, plus fastener and gate hardware checks. Refinishing is far less frequent than iron.
  • Mesh: cleaning the panels and checking post sleeves and latches, plus keeping every section reinstalled after removal.

Gates — where all four systems get compared honestly

  • Every one of these materials needs a gate that self-closes and self-latches, with latch placement, shielding and release height confirmed for your project.
  • Gate hardware is the most-used moving part on any pool barrier, and it is the first thing to fail on a cheap system regardless of material.
  • Glass gates use stainless hinges and latches sized to the panel; iron and aluminum use post-mounted hardware; mesh uses a self-closing gate section within the mesh run.
  • Confirming gate requirements with the applicable municipality or AHJ is the customer's responsibility before final approval.

What has to be under any of them

  • Glass spigots anchor into a structural slab, bond beam or engineered footing — never into a paver, sand setting bed or compacted aggregate (ABC) alone.
  • Iron and aluminum posts need either a core-drilled structural slab or a proper footing; setting posts in a thin mow strip is a common shortcut that shows up later.
  • Mesh post sleeves are drilled into deck material and are the least demanding structurally, which is part of why it is the fast option.
  • AE will not drill a post-tension slab without written homeowner permission plus documented tendon locating such as an appropriate scan or clear professional marking.

Pick by what the fence line faces

  • Faces a mountain, golf course, city lights or a designed yard → glass.
  • Faces a block wall or a side yard nobody looks at → aluminum, or iron if the community's design standards call for metal.
  • Barrier needed now, or the situation is temporary or a rental → mesh.
  • Mixed run → some projects use glass on the view side and aluminum on the side yards, which is often the best use of the budget.

A.R.S. §36-1681(B)(1) states that a barrier within the statute's scope must be at least five feet high, and the statute contains exceptions and permits equal or more stringent local ordinances. It is the pragmatic option when a barrier is needed quickly, when the yard is a rental, or when a permanent perimeter is planned later. It is not the option people choose for a finished outdoor room.

On cost, yes. On the two things people actually notice — the sightline and the finished look — aluminum sits with iron, not with glass. Powder-coated aluminum puts the same repeating vertical picket line across your view that iron does. What it buys you over steel is a different corrosion profile and usually less refinishing, at a lower installed cost.

Work from what the fence line faces and how the yard is used. If it faces a mountain, a golf course, city lights or a designed yard you spend money on, glass is the only one of the four that keeps that sightline. If it faces a block wall you never look at, aluminum or iron will do the job for far less. If you need a barrier in place fast, or the arrangement is temporary, mesh is the honest answer.
