Case study — installer failure

Bolt-down spigots on a wall that was never checked for anchoring.

This is a real Phoenix-area hillside pool fence — not ours. The installer used surface-mount bolt-down spigots on a stucco parapet wall cap without verifying what was underneath. The wall crumbled, the anchors let go, and the panels came down. This is exactly why we're not the cheapest — and why hiring the right contractor matters.

What we're looking at

A frameless glass fence held on with nothing but surface bolts.

The panels in these photos were mounted with bolt-down (base-plate) spigots fastened directly to the top of a stucco parapet wall cap. Bolt-down spigots are a legitimate product — but they only work when the surface beneath them is a real structural element: a proper concrete footing, a poured beam, or a slab engineered for the load.

Here, the fasteners tore out of the wall cap on the very first real load. The cap crumbled, the bolts pulled the top course of block with them, and panel after panel came down along the run. Nothing about this failure is the glass's fault. The glass is intact. The anchoring was never verified in the first place.

Root cause

Five things a qualified installer would have caught before drilling.

  1. No verified structural substrate

    A stucco wall cap is a finish, not a footing. Bolt-down spigots have to land in a footing, poured beam, or engineered slab. Nobody probed or cored to confirm what was actually under the cap.

  2. Wrong mounting system for the wall

    On a low parapet with unknown block cores, the correct call is often core-drilled spigots into a poured beam, or a side-mount / fascia-mount system engineered to the wall — not surface bolts through decorative stucco.

  3. No wind-load or panel-height review

    Panel size, height, and post spacing have to be sized to wind load per manufacturer documentation. A tall panel on a hillside catches wind like a sail — the anchor path has to be sized for it.

  4. No inspection or code sign-off path

    This job appears to have been installed without a permit or third-party inspection. A pool-barrier install this exposed should be permitted and inspected — that's another set of eyes on the anchoring.

  5. Priced to win, not to last

    The only way to hit the cheapest bid on a job like this is to skip the parts you can't see — the anchor engineering, the core drilling, the correct hardware, the inspection. Those are the parts that hold the fence up.

  6. No accountability after failure

    The homeowner is now paying twice: once for the failed install, and again to have it torn out, the wall repaired, and a properly engineered system installed in its place.

  • Every mounting condition is verified before hardware is selected — footing, poured beam, structural slab, or engineered substitute.
  • Correct mounting system chosen to the wall: core-drilled spigots into a footing/beam, side-mount / fascia-mount, or bolt-down only where a real structural surface is confirmed.
  • Wind-load sizing, panel thickness, and post spacing specified per manufacturer documentation for the site.
  • Permits, inspection requirements and stainless hardware selection depend on the municipality, the substrate and the signed scope for the specific project.
  • Final warranty terms — workmanship, glass panels, spigots and gate hardware — are confirmed in the signed project agreement.
