Here is how the fixture types actually compare, where each one still makes sense, and what has to be documented before anything is wired.
LED — the default for new pools
- Highest usable output per watt of the common options, with white or color-changing versions.
- Color shows and preset scenes are controlled through the fixture's own protocol or a compatible automation system.
- Long rated service life, but rated life is a manufacturer figure under stated conditions — heat, chemistry, and cycling all matter.
- Available as full fixtures for standard niches, as lamp retrofits for existing niches, and as small nicheless fixtures.
- Watch for: mixing brands or generations in one pool, which can leave colors that never quite match.
Fiber optic — soft light, shrinking support
- The illuminator sits out of the water and light travels through cable to the fitting, so no electrical fixture is in the pool.
- Produces a gentle, diffused glow that some owners prefer for perimeter and step accents.
- Lower delivered brightness than LED, and light loss increases with cable run length.
- Illuminator, fan, and cable are all serviceable parts, and support for residential fiber optic pool lighting has narrowed as manufacturers moved to LED.
- Still specified occasionally for design reasons; confirm parts availability and local service before committing.
Halogen and incandescent — legacy fixtures
- Common on older Valley pools and rarely selected for new construction.
- Far higher energy draw for the same visual result, with the lamp as a regular replacement item.
- Heat output means lamp replacement and fixture handling follow the manufacturer's procedure closely.
- Most owners encounter these only when deciding between another lamp replacement and an LED conversion.
Standard niche vs nicheless fixtures
- Standard niche: a recessed housing set in the shell, typically for a larger main light on a wall.
- Nicheless: a compact fixture on a wall fitting, easier to place in multiples and well suited to spas, benches, tanning ledges, and water features.
- Multiple smaller lights usually produce more even illumination than one large fixture in an irregular pool shape.
- Placement affects glare from the patio and the house — aim lights away from primary seating and viewing angles.
What actually changes how bright a pool looks
- Interior finish color: dark pebble absorbs light, light plaster and quartz reflect it.
- Water clarity: filtration and chemistry visibly change light performance.
- Fixture count and placement, which matter more than headline lumen numbers.
- Surrounding light: bright patio and landscape lighting reduce the contrast that makes pool light read well.
- Depth and shape: long, deep, or L-shaped pools rarely light evenly from one fixture.
Controls — switch, automation, or app
- Simple switch: on/off, and color sequences advanced by power cycling on many color LED fixtures.
- Pool automation: scenes, schedules, and remote control alongside pump, heater, and valve control.
- Separate landscape or permanent lighting systems generally have their own controller and app unless everything was chosen for compatibility.
- Decide the control platform before ordering, because retrofitting compatibility later usually means replacing components.
Retrofits and upgrades on an existing pool
- Working niche and conduit: an LED lamp or fixture swap is usually the direct upgrade path.
- Adding fixtures where none exist means new penetrations, wiring, and bonding — remodel scope, not maintenance.
- Any electrical work on pool lighting must meet current code requirements for bonding, grounding, GFCI protection, and listed equipment as determined by the electrician and the authority having jurisdiction.
- Pair the upgrade with other remodel work when possible: a resurface or deck project is the least disruptive time to touch lighting.
