Pumps — variable-speed vs single- and two-speed
- Variable-speed: adjustable RPM, quieter at low speed, and generally lower energy use per turnover because run time replaces brute force. Best match for pools with multiple features and long filtration hours.
- Two-speed: a lower speed for filtration and high speed for cleaning or features. Simpler electronics, fewer scheduling options.
- Single-speed: one speed, one noise level, and full power draw the entire run. Availability for many pool sizes is limited by federal efficiency rules.
- What actually decides it: plumbing size and run length, feature demand (spa jets, water features, in-floor cleaning), and the schedule you will really use.
- Confirm in writing: model, horsepower, control method, warranty term, and whether the automation system will control speeds.
Filters — cartridge vs DE vs sand
- Cartridge: most common on new Valley pools. No backwash discharge, cleaning is a rinse-and-reinstall task, and cartridges are a scheduled replacement item.
- DE (diatomaceous earth): the finest filtration of the three, with media recharge and backwashing as part of normal maintenance. Handling and disposal rules apply.
- Sand: lowest maintenance skill required and typically the least expensive media, with the coarsest filtration and periodic backwashing.
- Local factor: backwash discharge is regulated differently by city and by drainage situation. Confirm your municipality's requirements before selecting a backwashing filter.
- Confirm in writing: filter square footage relative to pump flow, cleaning interval, and replacement media cost as an ongoing item.
Heating — gas heater vs heat pump vs solar
- Gas heater: fastest recovery, works on cold nights, and the usual answer when a spa is part of the build. Requires adequate gas line sizing and code clearances.
- Heat pump: moves heat rather than making it, generally efficient over long runs, and slower to raise temperature. Capacity drops as air temperature drops.
- Solar: lowest operating cost, dependent on roof area, orientation, and season; typically an extender rather than an on-demand heater.
- Hybrid approach: gas for spa-on-demand, heat pump or solar for stretching pool season, is common in the Valley when the equipment pad and electrical service support it.
- Confirm in writing: BTU or capacity rating, gas or electrical requirements, clearances, and manufacturer's warranty conditions including water chemistry limits.
Sanitation — salt chlorine generator vs traditional chlorine vs supplemental systems
- Salt chlorine generator: produces chlorine from dissolved salt, so the pool is still chlorinated. Cells are consumables with a manufacturer-rated hour life, and scaling in hard water is a real maintenance factor.
- Traditional chlorine (tablets or liquid): lowest equipment cost, more owner handling and storage, and stabilizer buildup to watch with tablets.
- Supplemental UV or ozone: marketed to reduce chlorine demand and byproducts; they do not eliminate the need for a residual sanitizer. Read the manufacturer's published claim rather than a general promise.
- Local factor: Valley fill water is hard, so scale management is part of every sanitation plan, not an exception.
- Confirm in writing: cell model and rated life, chemistry ranges the warranty depends on, and who is responsible for chemistry after handoff.
Cleaning — in-floor system vs pressure/suction cleaner vs robot
- In-floor cleaning: heads plumbed into the shell, installed during construction or a full remodel, with no equipment sitting in the pool.
- Pressure and suction cleaners: driven off the pool's plumbing, lower upfront cost, visible hose in the water.
- Robotic: independent of pool plumbing, plug-in operation, and its own filter basket; it is also an appliance that needs storage and eventual replacement.
- Trade-off pattern: in-floor is a construction decision, robots are a purchase decision you can change your mind about later.
Automation — full system vs basic controls
- Full automation: schedules, remote app control, valve actuation, heater and light integration, and diagnostics in one interface.
- Basic timer or relay controls: reliable and inexpensive where the pool has a pump and a light and nothing else.
- Ecosystem lock-in is real. Mixing brands usually costs you features or adds adapters, so pick the platform before buying components.
- Automation needs a network connection to do the remote parts. Weak Wi-Fi at the equipment pad is a common and fixable failure point.
What lasts in Valley conditions
- Shade over the equipment pad reduces UV damage on lids, unions, and control panels.
- Hard water drives scale, which is the common denominator in salt cell, heater, and filter complaints.
- Service access matters: crowded pads make future repairs longer and more expensive.
- Parts availability and local service depth outlast every spec sheet. Ask who services the brand in the Valley before choosing it.
- Manufacturer-published maintenance intervals define both performance and warranty status.
