The best pool equipment for Arizona.
Our equipment-pad standard for new builds in 2026. These are the brands and models we install on our own homes and the homes we warranty. Salt-system, variable-speed, automation-ready — built for hard water, 115°F afternoons, and a 20-year ownership cycle.
- Real Arizona track record — warranty failure rate after 20+ years of installs.
- Variable-speed and inverter technology that actually cuts pool electricity bills.
- Parts availability in the Valley — not a 6-week wait from overseas.
- Manufacturer warranty terms that hold up in 115°F equipment-pad heat.
- Compatibility with modern automation (Pentair IntelliCenter / Jandy iAquaLink / Hayward OmniLogic).
- Salt-cell longevity in AZ hard water — measured in cell life, not marketing claims.
We don't take affiliate commissions. Rankings reflect what we install on our own homes and our clients' homes after 20+ years of warranty calls.
- #1Best pool pumpAE installs this$1,800–$2,400 installed
Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF Variable Speed Pump
The new IntelliFlo3 replaces the legacy IntelliFlo VSF as the most efficient, quietest, and most repairable variable-speed pump for Arizona. It's our default spec on every new build.
Why it ranks here- True variable-speed flow control (VSF) — measures actual flow, not just RPM, so it self-corrects as the filter loads up.
- Permanent magnet motor stays whisper-quiet at low speeds — clients with bedrooms near the equipment pad notice immediately.
- Field-replaceable drive: when the electronics eventually go, a tech swaps the drive, not the whole pump.
- Pentair parts network in the Valley is the deepest of any brand — no week-long delays for a pump-lid o-ring in July.
- Cuts pool pump electricity by roughly 60–80% versus a single-speed pump on the same circulation hours.
Watch-outs- Don't run it at full speed 8 hours a day — that defeats the entire purpose. Program 6–8 hours at 1,400–1,800 RPM for filtration and short bursts at high RPM for cleaner/spa.
- Requires a properly sized union and a clean plumbing run — installing it on a 1.5" suction line with a clogged skimmer is fighting the technology.
- #2Best pool heaterAE installs this$3,200–$4,200 installed (gas line not included)
Pentair MasterTemp 400 (Natural Gas)
The most reliable gas pool heater we install in the Valley, period. We've had MasterTemps run 12–15 years on properly-treated water with annual service.
Why it ranks here- Cupronickel heat exchanger handles AZ hard water and salt-system byproducts dramatically better than the standard copper.
- 400k BTU is the right size for a 14–18k gallon pool plus an attached spa — heats a spa from 65°F to 102°F in about 35 minutes.
- Field-serviceable burner tray and gas valve — no full-unit replacements for a $40 part.
- Pentair gas-train parts are stocked at every supply house we deal with.
Watch-outs- Pair with cupronickel or specify it explicitly. Standard copper exchangers in AZ salt pools fail in 4–7 years.
- Needs a real gas line. A 3/4" line at the end of a long run will never feed 400k BTU and you'll chase 'won't fire' codes forever.
- #3Best salt cellAE installs this$900–$1,300 installed
Pentair IntelliChlor IC60 Salt Cell
The Valley standard for residential salt pools. Properly sized (IC60 on most 15–20k gallon pools), it runs 5–7 years before cell replacement.
Why it ranks here- Self-cleaning reverse-polarity cycle protects cell plates from calcium buildup — the #1 thing that kills salt cells in AZ hard water.
- Integrated flow and temp sensors prevent dry-firing — the second biggest cell killer.
- Communicates natively with IntelliCenter — no wiring add-ons or third-party adapters.
- Cell-life indicator on the controller is accurate, so you replace before the chlorine drops, not after a green pool.
Watch-outs- Oversize one step from manufacturer's chart for AZ — IC40 on a 20k pool will fail in 3 years. IC60 is our floor.
- Salt level matters. Run between 3,200–3,400 ppm. People who let it ride at 2,800 burn cells out twice as fast.
- #4Best pool automationAE installs this$2,200–$3,800 installed (base system)
Pentair IntelliCenter Automation
If the pump and heater are Pentair, this is a one-cable add-on. App control, scheduling, freeze-protect, and a clean dashboard that doesn't feel like 2009 software.
Why it ranks here- Single ecosystem with the IntelliFlo3, IntelliChlor, MasterTemp, and ScreenLogic — no translator boards.
- App works on actual modern phones — firmware updates happen, unlike some competitors.
- Freeze-protection automation matters on the 4–5 nights a year the Valley dips below 35°F.
- Scenes for pool/spa changeover, water features, and lighting work the way clients actually use them.
Watch-outs- Don't mix automation brands. A Hayward heater on a Pentair IntelliCenter works — until it doesn't, and then no one will warranty it.
- #5Best pool filter$900–$1,400 installed
Pentair Clean & Clear Plus Cartridge Filter (520 sq ft)
Oversized cartridge filtration is the right answer in the Valley — long clean intervals, no backwash water waste, and dramatically cleaner water than a sand filter.
Why it ranks here- 520 sq ft of media on a typical residential pool means 6–9 months between cleanings, not 6–9 weeks.
- Zero backwash water waste — important when our county is publishing drought rules.
- Cartridges are replaceable, not the whole filter — about $280 every 3–4 years.
- Pairs cleanly with variable-speed pumps; sand filters fight low-flow operation.
Watch-outs- Undersized cartridge filters (320 sq ft and below) clog fast and starve the pump — don't let a builder spec down to save $200.
If a salesperson pushes one of these, ask why.
- Single-speed pool pumps — Banned for most new installs under federal DOE rules anyway, and they cost roughly 4x as much to run. Anyone still recommending one is closing-out old inventory.
- Standard copper heat exchangers on salt pools — They fail in 4–7 years in AZ salt water. Cupronickel is $200–$400 more on the front end and 10+ years longer in service life.
- Off-brand 'compatible' salt cells — Voids the controller warranty, often skips the flow sensor, and the plates are thinner. We've replaced a lot of pools that 'saved' $300 on a knock-off cell.
- Sand filters on small residential pools — Backwash waste, worse water clarity, and they fight variable-speed pumps. Cartridge is the AZ answer.
