Pentair vs Jandy vs Hayward. After twenty years of warranty calls.
Every pool builder in Arizona installs one of these three brands. Most pick one because of a rebate program, not because it's the best fit for your pool. Here's what we actually install, what we replace most often under warranty, and which 'equipment package' is really a kickback in disguise.
Pentair
We install- Best at
- IntelliFlo3 VSF pumps, MasterTemp heaters, IntelliCenter automation, IntelliBrite color LEDs, and the AA in-floor cleaning system. Best-in-class energy efficiency on the variable-speed pumps.
- Weak at
- Higher up-front cost. IntelliCenter has a real learning curve for homeowners who just want an on/off button.
- Warranty
- 60 months on most IntelliFlo pumps when registered through a Pentair Platinum dealer (AE qualifies). 24 months on MasterTemp heaters. Salt cell warranty depends on registered cell hours, not the install date.
- AE notes
- Default choice for our premium builds. Parts availability in Arizona is the best of the three. Service techs at every distributor know it cold.
Jandy (Zodiac/Fluidra)
Case-by-case- Best at
- JXi heaters are quiet and compact. AquaLink RS automation is rock-solid once configured. ePump variable-speed is competitive on price.
- Weak at
- We see more PCB board failures on AquaLink panels in the 5–8 year window than on Pentair IntelliCenter. Color LED options are thinner.
- Warranty
- 24-month parts on most equipment. JXi heaters get an extra 12 months on the heat exchanger when installed by a ProEdge Platinum dealer.
- AE notes
- Great middle-tier choice. We spec Jandy when a homeowner already has Jandy plumbing or when budget rules out IntelliCenter.
Hayward
Case-by-case- Best at
- TriStar VS pumps are fairly priced and easy to service. OmniLogic automation is the most homeowner-friendly app of the three.
- Weak at
- Universal H-Series heater bonnet corrosion in coastal-like conditions (yes, even in Arizona — chlorinated indoor enclosures qualify). AquaRite salt cells underperform Pentair IC40s on cell life in our experience.
- Warranty
- 36 months on TriStar VS, 24 months on most heaters, prorated on salt cells.
- AE notes
- We install Hayward when a homeowner explicitly requests it or when they want OmniLogic specifically. Solid brand, but not our default.

Pentair
- Best variable-speed pump efficiency we've measured
- Longest realistic salt cell life in hard AZ water
- Service network in every AZ distributor
- AA in-floor cleaning is the only true competitor to Paramount
- Highest equipment-pad cost of the three
- IntelliCenter setup is complex without an installer who knows it
- App is functional but feels two years behind Hayward
Jandy
- JXi heaters run quieter than MasterTemp or Universal
- iAquaLink app is genuinely good
- Strong middle-tier pricing
- AquaLink board failures we've seen more than on IntelliCenter
- Salt cell life trails Pentair noticeably
- LED options are limited if a homeowner wants color-show effects
Hayward
- OmniLogic app is the most user-friendly
- TriStar VS is competitively priced
- Easy to service — parts are interchangeable across model years
- AquaRite salt cell life is the shortest of the three in AZ
- We've replaced more Universal H-Series bonnets than the other two combined
- Mid-tier feel on the equipment pad — not premium aesthetics
The best brand spec installed by an unlicensed crew is still a bad job.
In Arizona, any work over $1,000 in combined labor + materials requires a licensed contractor — that's lifetime per residence, not per visit. If a worker is hurt on your property and isn't covered by workers' comp, you can be personally responsible for the medical bills. Verify any contractor — including ours — before you sign.
