Lawn-to-Turf Conversion

Stop mowing. Stop watering. Keep the green.

If you're done with weekend mowing, chasing weeds, and watching your July water bill climb — this is the conversion we do more than any other. Rip out the grass, install a real base, roll out turf that stays green year-round in the Arizona sun.

Why homeowners call us

Four reasons the grass is on its way out.

You're tired of mowing.

Weekly mow, edge, blow — May through October in Phoenix. That's 20+ Saturdays a year you don't get back. Turf ends the whole ritual.

You're tired of weeds.

Bermuda, spurge, crabgrass, nutsedge — Arizona weeds shrug off half the products at the hardware store. Our base spec kills the substrate they need to grow.

Your water bill has stopped being funny.

A 1,000 sq ft cool-season lawn typically drinks 50,000–75,000 gallons a year here. That bill peaks in July and August — the months you use the yard the least.

You want a fix that pays itself back.

Turf isn't cheap up-front, but water savings, killed mowing costs, and city rebates typically pay it back in 6–10 years — and the yard stays green the whole time.

The math (honest version)

What a 1,000 sq ft lawn actually costs you every year.

Water
$400–$900 / yr

Based on typical Phoenix summer tier pricing on 50–75k gallons.

Mowing + edging
$1,000–$1,800 / yr

Weekly service or 30+ hours of your Saturdays, gas, string, and a mower amortized.

Weeds, fertilizer, over-seed
$150–$400 / yr

Pre-emergent, spot spray, seasonal seed and fertilizer.

Recurring annual carrying cost
~$1,550 – $3,100 / year

A well-installed turf conversion on the same footprint runs roughly $8,000–$14,000 depending on tier, base upgrades, and tear-out complexity — see the full artificial turf cost breakdown. Subtract your city's water rebate (check the AZ Turf Rebate Finder) and the math usually lands in the 6–10-year payback window — the yard stays green the whole time.

What's in every AE conversion

No shortcuts on the part you can't see.

90% of turf failures we get called to fix — bumps, weed punch-through, dog smell, dead spots — trace back to base prep somebody else rushed. This is the spec we won't compromise on.

  • Sod and root removal (not just cut-down — the roots leave the property)
  • Pre-emergent + geotextile weed barrier under the whole install
  • Compacted ABC base to spec (turf-specific, not paver spec)
  • AE Pet Turf Infiltration base upgrade available for dog yards
  • Cool-touch yarn options for west- and south-facing full-sun exposures
  • Sprinkler caps + irrigation adjustments for surrounding beds
  • Post-install cleanup and haul-off — driveway swept, gate closed
  • Rebate paperwork assist for cities that pay for turf conversions
Common questions

What Phoenix homeowners ask before switching.

How much water does a real Arizona lawn actually use?+

Municipal water studies across the Valley (SRP, City of Phoenix, AMWUA) show cool-season lawns in the Phoenix metro typically use 50–75 gallons per square foot per year to stay green — the bulk of it May through September. On a 1,000 sq ft lawn that's ~50,000–75,000 gallons a year that stop hitting your water bill the day the turf goes in.

What's the payback period on replacing grass with turf?+

Most Valley homeowners see the full install pay itself back in 6–10 years through water savings, plus what they were paying for mowing, fertilizing, over-seeding, and weed control. Add your city's water rebate on top and the payback shortens meaningfully — see our AZ Turf Rebate Finder for real per-city numbers.

Do I have to tear out my sprinklers?+

No. We cap the irrigation heads in the turf area but leave the system live so any adjacent planters, trees, or beds stay watered. If you want the whole yard converted, we can decommission and pressure-test the line as part of the scope.

How do you keep weeds from coming back?+

Weeds grow in the base, not the turf. Our spec: full sod/root removal (not just cut down), pre-emergent, geotextile weed barrier, then compacted ABC base to spec. Any weed that shows up after that came in from wind seed and pulls with two fingers — we cover that under our aftercare.

Is it safe for kids and pets?+

Yes. We install pet-safe systems with the AE Pet Turf Infiltration base, which is designed to actually drain instead of trapping urine in the sub-base. Cool-touch yarn options are available for full-sun exposures. See our /best-artificial-turf-for-dogs-arizona guide.

How long does the install take?+

Most lawn-to-turf conversions run 2–5 install days once materials are on-site. Tear-out and base prep is the slowest part; the turf itself lays fast. We'll give you a firm date range at the site walk — no vague windows.
