The short answer
Pool automation is a controller that runs equipment you already own on a schedule and lets you change it from a keypad, a panel, or a phone app — pump speeds, pool-to-spa changeover, heater, lights, and water features, without walking out to the pad.
It does not make equipment better than it is, clean the pool, manage chemistry, or replace service. A single-pump play pool gains far less than a pool-and-spa with a heater, actuated valves, and features.
What a pool automation system controls
Every platform is a control board with relays and low-voltage outputs, wired to the equipment it is allowed to switch. Anything not wired to the controller is not automated.
- Filtration pump — on/off, plus speed selection on a compatible variable-speed pump.
- Valve actuators — motorized valves that move water between pool and spa.
- Heater or heat pump — call for heat, with separate pool and spa setpoints.
- Lighting — pool, spa, and low-voltage landscape circuits, including scenes on compatible LEDs.
- Water features and cleaner circuits — a dedicated pump, or a valve that diverts flow.
- Salt chlorine generator output, when the cell and controller share an ecosystem.

Pump schedules and variable-speed control
This is where automation earns most of its keep: filtration wants a long, low, quiet run, a cleaner or spa jet wants short and high-flow, and a waterfall wants whatever looks right. Speed control only works when the pump and controller communicate — a compatible variable-speed model wired for it, not a pump on a relay. Correct run time depends on your pool volume, pump curve, filter, and sanitizer, and should change between July and January.
Pool/spa mode and valve actuators
Spa mode is what most homeowners want and what older pools most often lack. Changing modes moves both the suction and return valves and usually starts the heater, so it needs motorized actuators wired back to the controller. If your valves have manual handles today, those actuators, wiring, and labor are part of the retrofit — and a blower, jets pump, or spillover valve each add a circuit.
Heating, lighting, and water features
A controller can start a gas heater or heat pump, hold separate pool and spa setpoints, and pair heat with the right pump speed so the heater sees enough flow. It does not change how fast a heater heats — that is output, spa volume, cover, wind, and starting temperature.
Color-changing LED pool and spa lights hold scenes through the controller instead of cycling power, and low-voltage landscape lighting can often run on the same system. Features come two ways: a dedicated feature pump on its own circuit, or a diverter valve sharing the main pump's flow. The first is easier to automate; the second is cheaper but ties the feature to filtration.
Sanitizer and chemistry — where automation stops
A controller can adjust salt chlorine generator output when the cell and controller are from the same ecosystem and wired for it. That is output control, not chemistry management — it is not testing your water. Measuring and correcting pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, or stabilizer takes separate sensing and feed equipment. If a proposal implies the pool balances itself, ask which sensors are included.
App control, the panel, and Wi-Fi at the pad
Every mainstream system has three layers: the board at the pad, a local panel or keypad, and a phone app that reaches the controller over your network and the manufacturer's cloud. The app is the convenient layer, not the essential one — a well-installed system keeps running its schedules when the internet drops. Make sure someone in the house can run pool and spa mode at the panel.
The pad is usually the worst-covered spot on the property: far side of the house, behind block walls, sometimes inside a masonry enclosure. Signal that is perfect on the patio can be unusable twenty feet out, so check it before the scope is final. Weak coverage is a network fix that often falls outside a pool contractor's scope.
Basic controls versus full pool-and-spa automation
Pick the smallest tier that solves your actual problem. The driver is circuit count, not brand.
- Pump-only scheduling — the pump's own keypad. No app, no spa mode, no valve control.
- Basic automation — a small controller and app for a pump, lights, and a circuit or two; usually not a full spa changeover.
- Full pool-and-spa automation — a larger board with room for actuators, heater control, multiple circuits, sensors, and expansion. Required for real spa mode.
New build versus retrofit — and what to confirm first
On a new build, automation is the cheapest it will ever be: conduit, valve positions, sensor locations, and equipment models can be chosen to work together while the trenches are open. Even if you defer the controller, running conduit now costs far less than adding it after the deck is poured. A retrofit works with equipment bought at different times, so single-speed pumps, non-communicating heaters, and manual valves limit what can truly be controlled. Confirm these on site, in writing:
- Electrical: sub-panel capacity, free circuits, and how the controller is fed and bonded by a licensed electrician.
- Relay count: switched circuits on the board versus the devices you want now and later.
- Pump: exact model, and whether it communicates with that controller.
- Heater: exact model, and whether it accepts external temperature control.
- Valves: how many exist, and which need actuators.
- Sanitizer and lighting: cell and fixture models, and whether output control and scenes are supported.
- Sensors: where water, air, and solar sensors mount, and whether they are included.
- Account and firmware: who owns the manufacturer account after handoff.
Arizona operating considerations
A few local realities change how these systems get specified and used in the Valley.
- Heat and sun: shade the controller enclosure and keep it clear of sprinkler and pool splash.
- Long summer schedules: circulation needs are much higher in July than January.
- Monsoons: confirm how the controller behaves when power returns, ask your electrician about surge protection, and expect storms to load the filter fast.
- Distance and block walls: the most common reasons app control is unreliable here.
- Freeze protection: rare in the low desert, regular at higher elevations — confirm the setting and a shaded air sensor.
Brand ecosystems, and what automation cannot diagnose
Pentair, Jandy, and Hayward each publish their own automation platform, and each works most completely with that manufacturer's own pumps, heaters, lights, and salt systems. Mixed-brand pads are common and often work, but deeper features — speed communication, salt output control, color scenes — are the most likely to be limited across families. Lineups and firmware change, so the reliable answer is current manufacturer documentation for your exact models.
Whatever the badge, the system only reports what its own board and sensors see. It does not know the impeller is worn, the cartridges are collapsing, the salt cell is scaled, or that a suction line is drawing air. Some platforms surface fault codes, useful to hand a service tech — but an error on a phone is a symptom, not a diagnosis.
Common mistakes homeowners make
- Buying fewer relays than the yard needs, then paying again to expand.
- Assuming spa mode is included when no valve actuators are in the scope.
- Expecting chemistry management from salt output control.
- Skipping the network check, then blaming the controller for the app.
- Leaving one schedule in place all year.
- Letting the installer create the manufacturer account under their own email, or never learning the panel.
Questions to ask before approving a proposal
- Which controller model, and how many switched circuits does it include?
- How many valve actuators are included, and does that cover full spa changeover?
- Is my pump communicating with the controller, or just on a relay?
- Does my heater accept external control, and is salt cell output control included?
- What electrical work is included, and who performs it?
- Is network coverage at the pad included, or is it mine to solve?
- What still works if the internet or the app is down?
- What warranty, training, and written schedule documentation come at handoff?
Is pool automation worth it — how to decide
There is no honest single price: your investment follows the controller tier, the number of valve actuators, whether the pump and heater can communicate, the electrical work the pad needs, and whether the network has to reach it. Ask for a line-item scope and compare circuit by circuit. Value is easiest to justify with a spa you use, a heater, actuated valves, features, or a variable-speed pump whose speeds you are not using — and hardest on a simple play pool with one pump.
Does pool automation save money on electricity?
It can help, but the savings come from a variable-speed pump running at lower speeds, not from the controller itself. Automation makes those speeds easy to schedule by season. Actual results depend on your pump, run times, pool volume, and utility rate, so treat advertised percentages with skepticism.
Can I add automation to an older pool?
Usually yes, with limits. A controller can switch nearly any device through a relay, but advanced features depend on the equipment: speed control needs a compatible variable-speed pump, spa mode needs actuators, temperature control needs a heater that accepts external control, and salt output control needs a compatible cell. Older pads are often automated at a basic level, then upgraded as equipment is replaced.
Will my pool still run if the Wi-Fi goes out?
On a properly installed system, yes. Schedules live on the controller at the pad and keep running without a network connection; what you lose is remote access until it returns. You can still operate the system at the panel or keypad, which is why it is worth learning those controls at handoff.
Does automation balance my pool chemistry?
No. Standard automation can adjust salt chlorine generator output, which is one input into chemistry, but it does not test water or manage pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, or stabilizer. Chemistry sensing and dosing is separate equipment with its own cost and upkeep. Plan on regular water testing either way.
How long does an automation retrofit take?
It depends almost entirely on scope. Swapping a controller onto a pad that already has compatible equipment and adequate electrical is a short job. Adding actuators, new circuits, sub-panel work, or a network extension makes it a multi-visit project with an electrician.
Should I match my automation to my equipment brand?
Where you can, yes — staying inside one ecosystem is the most reliable way to get speed communication, salt output control, and color scenes working together. But replacing healthy equipment purely to match a controller is rarely worth it. Confirm what your current models support, automate that, and let the ecosystem align as equipment reaches end of life.
