The turf system, top to bottom
- Sub-base: native soil excavated 3–4" and compacted.
- Base: quarter-minus rock, compacted to 95% — the correct material for turf (not pavers).
- Optional pet system: AE Pet Turf Infiltration System — perforated drain field that flushes urine straight to the storm drain or dry well.
- Turf: face weight 70–95 oz, dual-tone blade, polyethylene + nylon for durability.
- Infill: antimicrobial coated silica or zeolite for pets; cool-tech blends to reduce surface temperature.
Heat & reflection — what to know in Arizona
Turf can reach 150–180°F in full July sun. Two things matter: choose a cool-tech blade (titanium-dioxide infused, infrared-reflective) and place turf where afternoon shade exists or shade can be added. Never install turf opposite low-E windows without verifying reflection paths — concentrated reflections have melted blades within a single summer.
Pet ownership specifics
Standard turf installs trap urine in the infill. Our pet system uses a perforated infiltration layer beneath the turf so liquids drain immediately. Combined with zeolite infill (which captures and neutralizes ammonia), you get a no-smell, no-stain pet yard that survives multiple large dogs.
Maintenance — minimal, not zero
- Rinse pet areas weekly in summer, monthly in winter.
- Power brush 1–2x/year to lift fibers.
- Top-up infill every 3–5 years.
- Watch for low spots after monsoons — re-tamp the base if any develop.
Your investment
Typical 2025 ranges, installed: standard residential $9–$14/sq ft, pet-system upgrade adds $2–$4/sq ft, premium cool-tech turf adds $1–$3/sq ft. SRP, APS, and several Valley water providers offer turf rebates — see ae-outdoorliving.com/services/turf-rebate-finder.
Frequently asked questions
- Will my dogs damage the turf?
- No, with the right system. Our pet infiltration layer plus zeolite infill handles multiple large dogs without smell or staining. Standard turf without that system is what people complain about.
- How hot does it really get?
- Standard turf in full July sun reaches 150–180°F. Cool-tech blades drop that 20–30°F. Pair with afternoon shade or a pergola for the most-used zones.
- Do I qualify for a turf rebate?
- Most SRP, APS, and Valley water-provider customers do. Our free Rebate Finder checks every active program against your address in 60 seconds.
Your AE-grade checklist
- 01Confirm quarter-minus base depth and compaction.
- 02Confirm turf brand, face weight, and warranty (10+ years).
- 03If pets: confirm AE Pet Turf Infiltration System or equivalent.
- 04Confirm infill type (cool-tech for sun; zeolite for pets).
