Choosing your interior finish
In Arizona water chemistry, pebble outlasts plaster nearly 2x. The upfront premium typically pays back in deferred re-finishing.
- Plaster: lowest cost, 7–10 year lifespan, smoothest feel.
- Quartz blends: mid-tier, 10–15 years, richer color, slightly textured.
- Pebble (PebbleSheen / PebbleTec): highest cost, 15–20+ years, deepest color, most durable.
Equipment — the three real choices
Every modern pool will be built around one of three equipment ecosystems: Pentair, Jandy (Zodiac), or Hayward. All three make excellent variable-speed pumps, salt cells, heaters, and automation. The decision usually comes down to local parts/service density and the automation app your service tech prefers.
- Pentair IntelliCenter: strongest app, deepest dealer network in AZ.
- Jandy iAquaLink: clean UI, strong heater line-up.
- Hayward OmniLogic: best for in-floor cleaning system integration.
In-floor cleaning vs robotic vacuum
In-floor systems (Paramount, A&A) circulate the whole pool and are silent, but add cost up-front and require dedicated valves. Robotic vacuums (Dolphin, Polaris) are cheaper, work on any pool, and clean walls/waterline that in-floor heads miss. Many AE clients run both: in-floor for daily turnover, robotic monthly.
Permits & HOA
When permitting is included in AE's written scope, AE prepares and submits the pool permit in our name, manages the inspection schedule, and submits HOA architectural review packages with renderings. Most Valley cities require: building permit, electrical, gas (if heater), and barrier inspection. Plan 2–4 weeks for permitting depending on city.
Your investment
Typical 2025 ranges: spool / plunge pool $55k–$85k, standard residential pool $75k–$130k, full backyard transformation with pool + spa + hardscape + shade structure $150k–$300k+. Numbers depend on size, depth, finish, equipment tier, deck material, and site access.
Frequently asked questions
- How long does a pool build actually take?
- Once permits clear, 10–16 weeks for a standard residential pool. Add 2–4 weeks for permitting, plus weather. Anyone promising under 8 weeks is skipping inspections.
- Is pebble worth the upfront premium over plaster?
- Yes for most owners. Pebble lasts roughly twice as long in Arizona water chemistry, so the per-year cost is lower despite the higher install price.
- Salt vs chlorine?
- Salt systems still produce chlorine — they just generate it on-site. Lower maintenance, softer water, slightly higher equipment cost. We install salt on most new builds.
- Do I need a barrier even if I have a fenced yard?
- Yes. Arizona pool barrier code is specific (height, gate, latch). Perimeter fencing rarely meets it without modification.
Your AE-grade checklist
- 01Choose interior finish based on lifespan vs upfront budget.
- 02Pick one equipment ecosystem (Pentair / Jandy / Hayward).
- 03Decide in-floor, robotic, or both.
- 04Confirm permits are pulled in the builder's name.
- 05Confirm barrier (fence) plan meets ICC and local code.
