Wood
- Warmest look, easiest to detail with corbels, rafter tails, and stained ceilings.
- Needs a refinishing rhythm set by the finish manufacturer; Arizona UV shortens recoat intervals compared with milder climates.
- Checking and greying on exposed members is normal weathering, not a defect.
- Spans are shorter than steel for the same member depth, so expect more posts on a wide cover.
Aluminum
- Does not rust, factory-finished, and typically the lowest routine upkeep of the three.
- The standard choice for louvered and operable roof systems.
- Manufactured systems come with published span, load, and wind limits that must be followed.
- Finish can be damaged by abrasive cleaning; use the manufacturer's care instructions.
Steel
- Longest clear spans and the fewest posts for large covered areas.
- Coating is the maintenance item — touch up scratches before corrosion starts, especially near pools and misters.
- Heavier structure usually means larger footings and more site work.
- Often the right answer for commercial-scale shade and for openings where posts would ruin the layout.
Roof and shade options on top of the frame
- Solid roof: maximum shade and rain protection, hottest trapped air without ventilation.
- Slatted or lattice: partial shade that moves through the day, better airflow.
- Operable louvers: adjustable shade and ventilation, with motor and control components to maintain.
- Shade fabric: lowest cost, replaceable, with a service life set by the fabric manufacturer.
Site realities that change the design
- Attachment to the house versus freestanding changes the structural detail and the review path.
- Footings depend on soil, existing hardscape, and the engineered detail. Post-tension slabs require documented tendon locating before any drilling.
- Setbacks, easements, lot coverage, and drainage can move or shrink a structure.
- Electrical for fans, heaters, or lighting has to be planned before the roof closes up.
Permits, HOA, and who confirms what
Requirements vary by city, county, and project classification. The customer is responsible for confirming requirements with the applicable municipality or authority having jurisdiction, and with the HOA and insurer where relevant. AE builds to the approved written scope and the approved plans for that project.
