Reflected Heat & Microclimate
Good with placement

Arizona yards have very different microclimates. West-facing walls, glass, artificial turf, pavers, travertine, porcelain, and pool decking all increase reflected heat. AE considers these before confirming placement.

About Upright Rosemary

Upright rosemary is Salvia rosmarinus, familiar under the synonym Rosmarinus officinalis. It is an evergreen, aromatic Mediterranean plant, not an Arizona native, and upright selections should not be confused with trailing rosemary. Plan roughly 4–5 feet tall by 3–4 feet wide, cultivar dependent. Blue to lavender flowers over a long local season offer bee, butterfly and hummingbird/pollinator value. Full sun and reflected sun can suit it when establishment and drainage are sound. Once established it uses low water, delivered deeply and infrequently into sharply or well-drained soil. Overwatering and root decline are the major design conflict: soggy soil or a shared high-water valve is a poor match. Foliage is for food only when cultivar/source identity is correct and the plant has not received landscape chemicals inconsistent with culinary use; a nursery landscape specimen is not automatically food-safe.

Best uses: Informal hedge, herb/pollinator garden and back-of-border structure on low-water irrigation

AE Designer Opinion

AE Designer Opinion: Build an informal rosemary hedge around the irrigation plan, not just the desired outline. In a Phoenix herb or pollinator garden it gives useful evergreen structure behind lower plants, but its mature woody spread and maintenance access still need ground. Beside a tight entry, aromatic oils and active bee visitation may make a different placement preferable. Let the plant remain leafy and lightly shaped rather than repeatedly hard-resetting old wood.

Design Uses

  • Herb garden with verified culinary sourcing and chemical history.
  • Pollinator garden structure behind lower flowers.
  • Informal evergreen hedge.
  • Upright screen with cultivar-appropriate height and width.
  • Back-of-border aromatic foliage on low-water irrigation.

Care & Maintenance

  • Establish the root system with deep irrigation and drainage.
  • After establishment, irrigate deeply and infrequently with dry-down.
  • Avoid soggy soil, shallow daily watering and shared high-water valves.
  • Shape lightly after flowering rather than repeatedly cutting into old leafless wood.
  • Do not hard-reset an established woody plant; preserve leafy growth.
  • Verify source identity and chemical history before any culinary harvest.

Common Homeowner Mistakes

  • Buying trailing rosemary for an upright screen.
  • Watering shallowly every day.
  • Combining rosemary with high-water planting on one valve.
  • Repeatedly cutting into old leafless wood or hard-resetting an established woody plant.
  • Assuming every nursery landscape specimen is automatically food-safe.

Placement Warnings

⚠ Culinary use depends on correct cultivar/source identification and chemical history. Aromatic oils, active bee visitation and mature spread call for thoughtful access; this is not an absolute allergy or pet-safety recommendation.

  • Keep the 3–4 ft mature spread outside narrow walks and entry clearance.
  • Plan maintenance access behind an informal hedge or screen.
  • Separate from a shared high-water valve and soggy soil.
  • Consider active bee visitation and aromatic oils near frequent contact routes.
  • Do not harvest for food without verifying identity and landscape chemical history.
