Pool resurfacing cost calculator
Build an itemized planning range from interior surface area, finish selection, waterline tile, and coping. The guidance below also helps you compare samples, care requirements, and written scope before choosing a finish.
Your pool
Your planning range
Estimated interior surface area
900 sq ft
Quartz-aggregate finish — interior
$7,200–$10,800
Finish selection: Compare aggregate size, texture, color variation, and the selected product's care requirements.
Waterline tile
$3,200–$6,300
Total planning range
$10,400–$17,100
Exposed quartz aggregate can add color and visual variation. Compare texture and an actual sample before selecting.
Planning ranges only, not a quote. Final investment depends on measured surface area, the condition of the existing shell and tile line, plumbing and equipment scope, selections, access, and the signed agreement.
How this estimate is built
The calculator estimates the pool's interior surface — floor and walls, not only the water footprint. Use the rectangular dimensions for an approximation, or enter a measured interior area directly when one is available.
- Standard white plaster
- $5.5–$8.5/interior sq ft
- Quartz-aggregate finish
- $8–$12/interior sq ft
- Pebble finish
- $11–$16/interior sq ft
- Premium / polished pebble
- $14–$21/interior sq ft
The interior line uses the greater of area × rate or the existing $5,500 low / $7,500 high interior allowances; those allowances are not added fees. When selected, waterline tile adds $35–$70 per linear foot and coping adds $45–$95 per linear foot. Both use the same entered linear feet.
Displayed amounts round to the nearest $100. These are this tool's planning assumptions, not an independently surveyed market rate or guaranteed offer. The measured scope, existing condition, selections, and written proposal will confirm the project.
What moves the number up
- Hydro-blasting or full chip-out of a failing surface instead of a standard prep.
- Structural crack repair, exposed gunite, or rebar found once the shell is drained.
- Plumbing line repairs, new main drain covers where required, or equipment replaced while the pool is down.
- Glass or premium tile at the waterline, and step and bench tile details.
- Deck repair where the coping is removed, and difficult access for demo and material.
- Refill water and the selected finish manufacturer's required startup and water-care program.
Choose the finish with the whole project in mind
Compare the exact product sample, texture, aggregate, appearance, and care requirements — screen colors are not an exact substitute for a sample. Useful life depends on the selected finish, installation, startup, water care, and condition. Ask for the selected product's written material warranty and AE's separate installation or workmanship terms before approval.
Frequently asked questions
- How much does it cost to resurface a pool in Arizona?
- This calculator applies the selected finish's existing per-square-foot rate to the estimated interior area, subject to its existing $5,500 low and $7,500 high interior allowances. Waterline tile at $35–$70 per linear foot and coping at $45–$95 per linear foot are added only when selected. The result is an itemized planning estimate, not a proposal; measured conditions, selections, scope, and the signed agreement control.
- How do I know how many square feet my pool interior is?
- For a rectangular approximation, interior area is roughly (perimeter × average depth) + (length × width). A 15×30 pool averaging 5 feet deep works out to about 900 square feet. Sloped bottoms, steps, benches, freeform shapes, and spas need a measured takeoff. Enter interior square footage directly when you have it from plans or a qualified professional; otherwise use the dimensions for a planning estimate.
- How often does a pool need to be resurfaced?
- There is no universal replacement age. Useful life depends on the exact finish, installation, startup, water care, exposure, and current condition. Changes in texture, visible material loss, cracks, delamination, or discoloration can have different causes, so ask a qualified pool professional to assess the surface rather than diagnosing it from stains alone. Request the selected product's material warranty and separate installation or workmanship terms in writing.
- Should I replace the waterline tile at the same time?
- Assess the existing tile's condition and the finish you want before deciding. Sound tile may be retained when the required preparation and project assessment support that scope; damaged tile or a different design may support replacement. Compare retained-tile and replacement options as separate written scopes. This calculator uses a $35–$70 per-linear-foot tile allowance when replacement is selected, but it does not guarantee savings or determine the final scope.
- What is not included in a resurfacing number?
- Common separate items are waterline tile, coping repair or replacement, deck repair at the coping, structural crack repair on the shell, plumbing line repairs found during demo, new main drain covers where required, equipment upgrades, and water for refill. A proposal that shows a single bundled number without these line items is hard to compare — ask for the breakdown.
- How long does a pool resurface take?
- Scheduling depends on preparation, repairs, finish, tile and coping scope, weather, inspections where applicable, and crew sequencing. Ask for the project-specific schedule in the written proposal. After installation, follow the selected finish manufacturer's startup, water-chemistry, brushing, and return-to-use instructions rather than relying on one generic timeline.
