September: Cool-down begins — third citrus feed, plan fall planting.

September is the pivot month. By late month, nights drop into the 70s, monsoon eases, and the second-best planting window opens. Use the first half to prep beds, and the second half to start design work for next spring's pool or hardscape build.

Your September task list

What to do — and why it matters in Arizona.

Plants & Trees
  • Third citrus feeding (last of the year).

September feed pushes fruit development for winter harvest.

Pool
  • Reduce pump to 6–8 hrs/day late month.

Water temps drop below 80°F and algae pressure eases.

Turf
  • Mid-month: scalp bermuda, overseed with rye.

Overseed window is Oct 1–20 in the lower Valley; September prep is non-negotiable.

Hardscape
  • Plan paver re-sand and sealer for October.

October cure conditions are ideal — book contractor now.

Irrigation
  • Reduce run-times ~15% from August.

Cooling temps + retained soil moisture cut demand fast.

Lighting
  • Test all transformers before holiday season.

Failed transformers in November mean dark Thanksgiving decor.

Projects to plan in September

Book the right month for the right build.

Arizona project timing matters more than most homeowners realize. Excavation lead times, plaster cure windows, monsoon prep, and HOA approvals all push optimal start dates 2–9 months ahead. Here's what to lock in this month for smooth delivery.

  • Spring 2027 pool builds — design starts now for January excavation.
  • Permanent holiday lighting (October install).
  • Outdoor kitchens with November–December finish.
