Zoning the yard

Separate adult zone (lounge, fire, kitchen) from kid zone (turf, play, splash) with a planted bed, change in elevation, or low wall. Lines of sight from inside the house to BOTH zones — never put a play area behind a structure that hides it from the kitchen window.

Water safety comes first

No fence, cover, alarm, shelf or design feature eliminates drowning risk or replaces active adult supervision. Confirm the required barrier or enclosure path for your property with the municipality or authority having jurisdiction, then plan layers of protection around it. Whenever children are in or near water, designate an undistracted adult Water Watcher.

Pool design choices for families

• Baja shelf with an umbrella sleeve — a shallow lounging area, with depth set by the approved project design; shallow water still requires undistracted active adult supervision.
• Beach entry or wide steps in addition to the standard ladder.
• Depth markers in tile rather than paint — markings can fade or wear over time and require periodic inspection and maintenance either way.
• Confirm the required barrier/enclosure path with the municipality or AHJ, then add approved layers such as an automatic cover or alarms; no layer replaces active adult supervision or an undistracted Water Watcher.
• Salt systems still generate chlorine; how the water feels depends on the complete sanitation system, water chemistry, operation and maintenance, not on the cell alone.

Turf & play surfaces

Turf drains quickly and holds up to daily kid and pet traffic, but turf is not automatically impact-attenuating. Fall protection comes from the complete surface and shock-pad system, selected for the fall height of the specific play equipment, the manufacturer's instructions and the applicable standard. Avoid decomposed granite play surfaces — it tracks into the house and into pool filters.

Things kids actually love

Water use is not automatically lower than a pool's: actual use varies by system design, run time, evaporation, splash-out and top-off. Mini putting green — an easy gateway sport.
