The shape sets the personality of your pool. Here's how each shape uses space, what it costs, and which fits which lifestyle.
Rectangle
Modern, architectural, easy to cover, best for laps. Pairs with linear water features and minimalist decks. Most popular AZ shape since 2020.
Freeform
Curved, organic, resort feel. Best with rock features, tropical landscape, and pebble finishes. Larger footprint requirement — every curve eats square footage.
Geometric (L-shape, T-shape)
Hybrid — straight edges with an angle break. Useful when fitting around an existing patio or accommodating a spa wing. Reads modern but with more visual interest than a pure rectangle.
Lap pool
Long, narrow (typically 8 ft x 35–50 ft). Best for swimmers. Smaller footprint than a square-footage-equivalent rectangle. $80K–$140K typical.
Plunge pool
Small (8 x 14 ft to 10 x 20 ft), shallow. AZ summer cooldown. Pairs with raised spa. $55K–$95K. Best for small lots or budget-conscious builds.
Vanishing edge / infinity
Water spills over one edge into a catch basin and recirculates. Dramatic visual, only works with a view (downhill drop). Add $25K–$60K over equivalent standard pool. Engineering-heavy.

Start with how you'll use it (laps, lounge, kid play, entertaining), then layer in lot constraints and architectural style. Shape last — never first. Most regrets come from picking shape from a magazine before mapping use.
