Living Swim Ponds

Living swim ponds that feel like part of the landscape.

A dedicated swimming experience with an organic landscape character. Planted regeneration areas and technical filtration may work together to manage water quality, depending on the system.

What makes a swim pond different

Three zones in conversation: a swim zone where you actually swim, a planted regeneration zone that contributes to water treatment, and a technical zone with pumps, filtration, and controls. The visual character is closer to a desert oasis than a pool.

Swimming zone, planted zone, technical zone

  • Swim zone: defined, deeper, designed for clarity and clean entry
  • Planted zone: aquatic plants in engineered media, contributing to filtration
  • Technical zone: pumps, mechanical filtration, optional drum filtration, controls

Materials & character

Natural stone coping, beach entries, planted shelves, and habitat-friendly edges. A swim pond reads as part of the landscape, not as a pool dropped into it.

Seasonal appearance — realistic expectations

Plants grow and recede. Water clarity shifts with temperature and load. A well-designed system stays swimmable, but it does not look identical every day of the year. This option is best for owners who welcome that.

Wildlife, plants, and water-quality boundaries

  • Properly circulated water resists stagnation — but no outdoor water can promise zero insects or wildlife
  • Fish and swimming water are separate system types unless specifically designed otherwise
  • Plants are selected for the climate and treatment approach, not aesthetics alone

Arizona-specific design

Sun exposure, evaporation, dust, monsoon runoff, and source water all shape the design. We size circulation, plan shade, and plan for cleanability up front.

FAQ

Honest answers.

How is a swim pond different from a natural pool?

+

A swim pond leans into landscape character. The planted regeneration area is more prominent, the edge tends to be organic, and the system reads more like a living part of the yard. A natural pool tends to read more like a designed pool.

Will the water look the same every day of the year?

+

No. A living system has seasonal variation — that is part of the appeal. We design for clarity and swimmability, not laboratory sterility.

Can fish live in a swim pond?

+

Fish and swimming water are treated as separate system types. Combining them requires a specialized design we have to approve up front.

Does AE handle plant selection?

+

Yes — aquatic plants and planting media are selected for the climate and the treatment approach, and they are part of the design package.
