Pondless Waterfalls

Pondless waterfalls and streams for Arizona backyards.

A pondless waterfall recirculates water through a hidden gravel reservoir, delivering movement and sound without an exposed pond at the base.

Image is design inspiration.

How the hidden reservoir works

Below the visible boulders or spillway, a sealed gravel basin holds the recirculating water. A pump draws from the basin, returns water to the top of the feature, and gravity carries it back down. There is no standing open water at the base.

Natural boulder, modern spillway, long stream

  • Natural boulder cascades — Arizona stone, organic character
  • Modern spillways — clean geometry, integrated with hardscape
  • Long streams — bring movement through a yard, connect zones

Reservoir, pump, plumbing, and service access

Every pondless feature has the same anatomy: reservoir capacity sized to the flow, pump matched to total dynamic head, accessible plumbing, and a service access point. We design for service, not just looks.

Sound, splash, and lighting

  • Sound level is tuned by drop height, flow rate, and basin geometry
  • Splash and wind exposure inform setback from patios and structures
  • Submersible or downlit options add a night dimension to the feature

Evaporation, autofill, and maintenance

Exposed water and waterfalls evaporate — that is physics, not a leak. We plan autofill with care so it does not hide an actual leak, and we set a realistic care cadence during design.

Integration with patios and entries

Pondless features work in compact courtyards, alongside patios, at entries, and as a transition between zones in a larger backyard.

FAQ

Honest answers.

Where does the water go?

+

Into a buried gravel reservoir at the base. The water recirculates from there through plumbing back to the top — there is no exposed pond.

Is it safer than a pond for kids and pets?

+

There is no standing open water at the base, which removes one of the concerns parents have about traditional ponds. Always pair with site-appropriate barriers and supervision.

How much water does it use?

+

Less than a swim pond or pool, but not zero — exposed waterfall surfaces evaporate, and wind affects splash and loss. We plan autofill and inspection access during design.

Can I add it to an existing yard?

+

Often yes. Existing utilities, hardscape, and access drive feasibility. We assess on site before designing.
