Can You Replace One Glass Pool Fence Panel?
A single damaged glass panel does not automatically mean replacing the entire fence. It also does not establish that a panel-only replacement is appropriate. The useful first question is what must be confirmed about the panel, hardware, mounting and barrier before fabrication. Treat replacement as a project-specific investigation—not an order based on a photograph or an attempt to remove the glass yourself.

Protect access before discussing appearance
If a pool barrier is impaired, restrict pool access and arrange qualified assessment and appropriate protective arrangements. Tape, an improvised panel or a temporarily closed gap is not approval of a functioning barrier. Do not touch damaged glass or attempt DIY removal. Describe the concern from a position that does not expose you to the damage.
No fence, gate or barrier replaces active adult supervision. Designate an undistracted adult Water Watcher whenever children are in or near water. CPSC Pool Safely guidance reinforces supervision and layers of protection. Replacement planning must account for protection while the condition is assessed, while materials are ordered and during the contracted work.
Separate a fixed panel from a gate
Identify whether the affected piece is fixed glass or part of a gate. A gate brings hinges, latching, movement and clearances into the investigation. Fixed glass still requires review of the supporting hardware, mounting and adjacent layout. Neither category proves the existing parts are appropriate for reuse.
Visible cracks do not establish why damage occurred. A qualified assessment may need to consider hardware condition, substrate, mounting and the approved detail alongside the panel. Keep the description neutral: location, observed condition and known history. Original installation photographs can document the earlier arrangement, but they do not establish the present condition of the fence or its suitability for retaining parts.

| Path | When to investigate | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Panel-only replacement | A qualified review supports retaining the surrounding system. | Current measurement, fabrication details, compatible hardware and written replacement scope. |
| Hardware or mounting work | Condition, operation or support needs investigation. | Model, substrate, mounting detail and appropriate professional assessment. |
| Layout or gate review | The affected piece changes movement, spacing or approved requirements. | Clearances, barrier protections, applicable authority and approved system documents. |
Gather records without handling the damage
Locate original drawings, product records, glass identification details and available installation photographs. Provide the permanent tempered-glass mark if it is already documented or can be photographed without approaching damaged material. Do not lean on, measure against or move the panel to collect information.
Ask the qualified professional to remeasure and confirm panel dimensions, required cutouts, holes, edgework and clearances. An old drawing can guide the investigation; it does not replace current field measurement. Document the actual hardware model and condition rather than describing it as a generic hinge or spigot. Adjacent panels looking alike is not evidence of interchangeable parts.
Confirm compatibility before ordering
Polaris publishes different model-specific cutout templates. That illustrates why compatibility depends on the selected model and its documents, not just a brand name. Do not substitute a nominal metric thickness or a similar-looking part for confirmed glass and hardware specifications. Reuse needs a qualified assessment of condition, substrate and mounting suitability.
AE uses 1/2-inch tempered safety glass for Sonoran Glass fences and primarily uses PRL glass and Polaris hardware; other suppliers may be selected in the written scope. The system is custom-built with individually sized panels. Final products, mounting, engineering, manufacturer requirements and the signed scope govern what is selected for this replacement—not a blanket promise that an old panel can be matched.
Fabrication follows confirmed measurements
Required cuts, holes, notches and edgework are completed before tempering. Vectra Glass describes this sequence as a general fabrication example; that citation is not a statement that AE uses Vectra. Tempered panels are not field-cut or field-drilled to make an uncertain fit work.
Every tempered panel AE installs has a permanent identification mark applied during fabrication. Confirm that mark and the specified glass type/thickness in the replacement scope. The customer must confirm required height and other project-specific requirements with the applicable municipality/AHJ and, where relevant, HOA and insurer before approval. Unresolved requirements must be confirmed before final fabrication; approved documents and site conditions control.
Bring this checklist to the review
- Restrict access and arrange qualified assessment for an impaired barrier.
- Collect available plans, marks, model records and non-contact photos.
- Identify fixed panel versus gate and unresolved hardware/mounting questions.
- Request professional remeasurement and fabrication details before ordering.
- Confirm temporary protections, final requirements and the written scope.
