Arizona Pool Fence Laws (2026) — What's Required and How to Comply Beautifully

What AZ law requires

  • Barrier at least 5 ft tall (measured from outside).
  • No openings larger than 4" anywhere in the barrier.
  • Self-closing, self-latching gate, latch ≥ 54" above ground.
  • Gate opens away from the pool.
  • Doors from the house into the pool area need an alarm OR self-closing/self-latching mechanism OR power safety cover.

Barrier options that comply

  • Glass fencing — see-through, premium look. Code-compliant when posts/spigots meet 4" gap rule.
  • Wrought iron — classic, view-friendly, pickets must be ≤ 4" apart.
  • Mesh (removable) — budget option for families with young kids, removed when not needed.
  • Block wall — perimeter compliance, blocks view (we use selectively).

City variations

Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale all follow the state baseline but add nuances (gate hardware ratings, door alarm specs). We pull the exact city's checklist for your address before designing the barrier.

Penalties

A noncompliant pool barrier can void homeowner insurance and create criminal liability if a drowning occurs. This is not a corner to cut.
