Outdoor Kitchen Appliance Buyer's Guide — What's Worth It, What's Not

Built-in BBQ

Non-negotiable. Spec 304 stainless (not 430). Top brands: Lynx, DCS, Hestan, Twin Eagles, Alfresco. Avoid sub-$1.5K builder-grade — they corrode in 3 AZ summers. Real BBQ adds $3K–$8K.

Side burner

Worth it. Sauces, sides, boiling shrimp boils — keeps you out of the kitchen. Add $600–$1,500.

Pizza oven

Gas: easier, faster pre-heat, more usable. Wood: better flavor, more theatre. Either way: $2.5K–$8K appliance + $2K–$5K install if built-in. Worth it for entertainers — overkill if you'll use it 3x/year.

Smoker

Big Green Egg or Kamado Joe in a built-in island is our most-loved add. $1.5K–$2.5K + $500 install opening. Pellet smokers (Traeger Timberline XL) are easier but need 110V.

Refrigeration

Outdoor-rated only — indoor fridges fail in AZ heat. Single-drawer fridge ($1.5K) covers most needs. Kegerator ($2K) is fun but high-maintenance.

Ice maker

Underrated. AZ entertaining lives on ice. Scotsman Brilliance nugget ice maker outdoor-rated: $3K+ but worth every dollar.

Vent hood

Required by code when the kitchen is under a solid roof. Not required under open pergolas. $1.5K–$4K + ducting.
