The Arizona Pergolas & Ramadas Guide

Materials, footings, shade percentages, and engineering for monsoon winds.

Material trade-offs

  • Cedar / redwood: warmest look, 15–20 year lifespan with stain, highest maintenance.
  • Powder-coated aluminum: 25+ year lifespan, low maintenance, lighter look.
  • Steel: longest lifespan, most engineering flexibility, highest cost.

Louvered vs fixed

Fixed pergolas with 2x3 lath give 50–60% shade — pleasant in spring, hot in July. Louvered systems (StruXure, Renson, ToughGuard) rotate from 0–170° and add motorized rain protection. The premium pays back in usable hours per year.

Footings & wind engineering

Valley monsoons generate 60–80 mph gusts. AE engineers every freestanding ramada or pergola for 90 mph design wind, 24"–36" deep footings, with #4 rebar cage. Bolt-on-paver kits are NOT engineered for monsoon — we will not install them.

Permits

Most Valley cities require a permit for any structure over 200 sq ft or attached to the home. AE pulls and manages.

Your investment

Typical 2025 ranges: fixed cedar pergola 12'x14' $8k–$14k, powder-coated aluminum same size $12k–$22k, louvered StruXure / equivalent $24k–$55k, full ramada with solid roof $35k–$90k+.

Frequently asked questions

Will a louvered pergola survive monsoon winds?
StruXure, Renson, and equivalents are engineered to 110+ mph when installed with the manufacturer footing spec. Bolt-on-paver kits are not — we will not install those.
How much shade does a fixed pergola really give?
A 2x3 lath at typical spacing produces 50–60% shade. Comfortable in spring and fall, hot at 3pm in July. Louvered hits 100% when closed.
Cedar or aluminum?
Cedar for warm/Old-World aesthetics if you accept staining every 2–3 years. Powder-coated aluminum for 25+ year low-maintenance ownership. Both are valid, just different commitments.

Your AE-grade checklist

  • 01Confirm material (cedar / aluminum / steel) and warranty.
  • 02Confirm shade % goal (fixed vs louvered).
  • 03Confirm footing depth ≥ 24" with engineered rebar.
  • 04Confirm wind-rated to 90 mph minimum.
  • 05Confirm permit pulled in builder's name.
