NPT, Pebble Tec, Wet Edge, and standard plaster. What survives a salt pool.
The interior finish is the single most-touched, most-visible surface on the pool — and the one most likely to fail early when it's specified wrong for Arizona hard water, salt chlorination, and brutal UV. We spec NPT on the majority of our builds because the manufacturing consistency, color depth in-water, and supplier-backed warranty are unmatched. Here's the honest installer-side ranking of the brands we actually trowel in.
NPT StoneScapes (Mini Pebble & Mini Pebble Tropics)
We install- Best at
- Our most-installed finish in the Valley. Exposed mini-pebble aggregate gives deep, natural in-water color and a 15–20 year lifespan on a properly chemistry-managed salt pool. Fine enough to be barefoot-comfortable.
- Weak at
- Higher upfront cost than standard plaster — typically 30–50% more. Color and finish quality are dictated by crew skill on the day of plaster; insist on a finisher who runs NPT every week, not once a quarter.
- Warranty
- 10-year limited material warranty through the NPT supplier network when installed by a certified applicator and registered. Honored cleanly when water chemistry logs back you up.
- AE notes
- Default spec for our pool builds. The lifecycle math beats every other finish in the Arizona market.
NPT QuartzScapes
We install- Best at
- Crushed quartz in a polymer-modified base — smoother underfoot than pebble, dramatically more durable than standard plaster. The right answer when a family wants a barefoot-smooth finish without giving up lifespan.
- Weak at
- Salt systems are harder on quartz than on pebble — keep salt in the 2,800–3,400 ppm spec and use a self-cleaning cell. Color depth is real but not as dramatic as pebble; view in-water samples before committing.
- Warranty
- 10-year limited through the NPT supplier network. Registration required.
- AE notes
- Our default spec when a client wants the smoothness of plaster with a real upgrade in lifespan.
NPT Jewelscapes (Glass Bead)
We install- Best at
- Crushed-glass aggregate with a true jewel-tone in-water shimmer that pebble and quartz can't replicate. The right finish for design-forward, photography-grade pools.
- Weak at
- Premium pricing — glass beads cost dramatically more than pebble or quartz aggregate. Slightly more textured underfoot than pebble; confirm samples before committing on a family swim pool.
- Warranty
- 10-year limited through the NPT supplier network. Honored cleanly with chemistry logs.
- AE notes
- We spec Jewelscapes on signature pools where the water color is the design feature.
Pebble Tec (PebbleSheen, PebbleFina)
We install- Best at
- The original pebble brand. PebbleFina is the smoothest exposed-aggregate finish on the market — closest barefoot feel to plaster. Strong national brand recognition for resale.
- Weak at
- Pricing runs at the top of the market. Color batches can vary slightly between truck loads on large pools — a competent finisher manages this; an inexperienced one doesn't.
- Warranty
- 10-year limited material warranty when installed by a Pebble Technology-certified applicator and registered within 30 days.
- AE notes
- We spec Pebble Tec when a client specifically asks for the brand, or when PebbleFina's barefoot smoothness is a non-negotiable.
Wet Edge Technologies (Primera Stone, Altima, Luna Quartz)
Case-by-case- Best at
- Genuinely competitive pebble and quartz finishes with a strong color palette. Pricing typically a touch under NPT and Pebble Tec for comparable specs.
- Weak at
- Supplier coverage in the Phoenix metro isn't as deep as NPT's — warranty claims and color matching on a re-plaster can take longer. Crew familiarity matters more than the brand spec sheet; we'll install Wet Edge when our finisher runs it regularly.
- Warranty
- 10-year limited on Primera Stone and Altima lines. Honored, but the supplier path is longer than NPT in AZ.
- AE notes
- We spec Wet Edge on case-by-case basis — usually when a client has seen a specific color in person and wants it matched.
Standard white marcite plaster
Case-by-case- Best at
- Lowest upfront cost. Easy to acid-wash and re-finish. Predictable look — bright blue water if that's the goal.
- Weak at
- 7–12 year lifespan in Arizona before mottling, etching, or staining force a re-plaster. Standard plaster shows every chemistry mistake — high pH, low calcium, salt out of spec — and it shows it fast. Not a long-term financial win once the second re-plaster lands.
- Warranty
- Typically 1 year on workmanship from the plastering subcontractor; no real material warranty.
- AE notes
- We'll install standard plaster on rental properties or short-hold pools. We won't recommend it on a long-term family pool — the lifecycle math is bad.
Off-brand 'pebble' from un-certified plasterers
We don't install- Best at
- Cheap up-front bid.
- Weak at
- Generic aggregate, no manufacturer warranty path, inconsistent batch color, and crews that don't know how to time the wash on a 105°F day. We tear these out at year 5–7 routinely.
- Warranty
- Whatever the plasterer writes on the contract — and whatever they're still around to honor.
- AE notes
- If the bid says 'pebble finish' without naming NPT, Pebble Tec, or Wet Edge, ask which line and which certified applicator. If the answer is vague, walk.

Plaster, pebble, or stone — which finish fits your pool?
Brand matters, but the bigger decision is the material category. Here's the short, honest version of how we'd help a homeowner choose between standard plaster, an aggregate pebble finish, and a stone/quartz-blend finish — before we ever talk brand SKUs.
Standard Plaster (Marcite)
$5k–$7k installed · 7–12 yr AZ lifespan
- Choose it if
- You own a rental, a short-hold flip, or a pool you plan to sell inside 5–7 years. You want the lowest upfront number and you're fine re-plastering on the next owner's clock.
- Skip it if
- This is a long-term family pool. Standard plaster shows every chemistry mistake — high pH, low calcium, salt out of spec — and the second re-plaster lands inside 15 years. Lifecycle math is bad.
- Best brand pick
- No brand wins here — plaster is a commodity. Hire a finisher who runs it every week.
Pebble (Aggregate)
$8k–$14k installed · 15–20 yr AZ lifespan
- Choose it if
- This is a forever pool. You want deep, natural in-water color, the longest realistic lifespan in Arizona on a salt system, and the strongest warranty path. Comfortable barefoot in the mini-pebble formats.
- Skip it if
- Anyone in the household wants the absolute smoothest barefoot feel of plaster and won't tolerate any texture underfoot at all.
- Best brand pick
- NPT StoneScapes Mini Pebble is our default. Pebble Tec PebbleFina when smoothness is non-negotiable.
Stone / Quartz Blend
$7k–$18k installed · 12–15 yr AZ lifespan
- Choose it if
- You want a real upgrade over standard plaster in lifespan and color depth, but you prefer the smoother, polished surface of a quartz-blend or the jewel-tone shimmer of a glass-bead finish for a design-forward pool.
- Skip it if
- You're running an aggressive salt system without disciplined chemistry — quartz blends are less forgiving than pebble when salt drifts out of spec.
- Best brand pick
- NPT QuartzScapes for barefoot-smooth lifespan. NPT Jewelscapes when the water color is the design feature.
Holding the home long-term? Pebble — almost always NPT StoneScapes Mini Pebble. Want plaster-smooth without the plaster lifespan? NPT QuartzScapes. Selling inside 5 years? Standard plaster is defensible. Want the pool itself to be the design feature? NPT Jewelscapes glass bead — once.
Plaster vs pebble vs stone/quartz — the honest answers.
The questions we get every week from homeowners comparing finishes for a new build or a re-plaster in the Valley.
What's the real difference between plaster, pebble, and stone/quartz?
+
Plaster (marcite) is a cement-and-marble-dust paste — the lowest cost and shortest lifespan (7–12 years in Arizona). Pebble is exposed-aggregate stone bonded into a polymer-modified cement base — the longest AZ lifespan (15–20 years on a salt pool) and the deepest in-water color. Stone/quartz blends use crushed quartz or glass beads in a polymer base for a smoother-than-pebble surface, jewel-tone color, and a 12–15 year lifespan.
Is pebble worth the extra cost over plaster in Arizona?
+
On a long-term family pool, yes. Pebble runs roughly 30–50% more upfront, but standard plaster typically needs re-plastering at 7–12 years versus 15–20 for pebble on a salt system. Over a 20-year hold you'll re-plaster twice on standard versus once on pebble — pebble wins the lifecycle math. On a rental or a 5-year flip, plaster is defensible.
Which finish is best for a salt-chlorinated pool?
+
Pebble. Aggregate pebble finishes (NPT StoneScapes, Pebble Tec PebbleFina) tolerate salt-system chemistry the best — they're more forgiving when salt drifts above 3,400 ppm than quartz or plaster. Quartz blends are second-best and still solid if your chemistry is disciplined. Standard plaster on a salt pool will mottle and etch fast.
Is pebble uncomfortable on bare feet?
+
Older 'large pebble' finishes were rough. Modern mini-pebble formats — NPT StoneScapes Mini Pebble and especially Pebble Tec's PebbleFina — are finer and barefoot-comfortable for almost everyone. If absolute plaster-smoothness is non-negotiable for a kids' pool, NPT QuartzScapes is the smoothest upgrade option that still beats plaster's lifespan.
What's the difference between QuartzScapes and Jewelscapes?
+
Both are NPT polymer-modified finishes. QuartzScapes uses crushed quartz aggregate for a smoother surface, natural color depth, and a 12–15 year lifespan at a moderate price premium over plaster. Jewelscapes uses crushed glass beads for true sapphire/emerald/amethyst water tones and a designer shimmer — at a meaningful price premium over both quartz and pebble.
How long should a quality pool finish last in Arizona?
+
With disciplined chemistry: standard plaster 7–12 years, NPT QuartzScapes 12–15 years, NPT Jewelscapes 12–15 years, NPT StoneScapes Mini Pebble and Pebble Tec PebbleFina 15–20 years. Bad chemistry — high pH, low calcium, salt out of spec — cuts every one of those numbers in half.
Does the brand really matter, or is the installer?
+
Both. Brand sets the ceiling — NPT, Pebble Tec, and Wet Edge have manufacturing tolerances and warranty paths that off-brand 'pebble' finishes don't. But the finisher's crew on plaster day decides whether you hit that ceiling. A premium brand applied by an inexperienced crew will underperform a mid-tier brand applied by a finisher who runs it every week.
What's the typical installed cost for each finish in Phoenix?
+
On an average residential pool (roughly 450 sq ft of interior surface): standard plaster $5k–$7k, NPT QuartzScapes $7k–$11k, Wet Edge $7k–$12k, NPT StoneScapes Mini Pebble $8k–$13k, Pebble Tec $9k–$14k, NPT Jewelscapes $11k–$18k. Add chip-out and prep for a re-plaster.
The best brand spec installed by an unlicensed crew is still a bad job.
In Arizona, any work over $1,000 in combined labor + materials requires a licensed contractor — that's lifetime per residence, not per visit. If a worker is hurt on your property and isn't covered by workers' comp, you can be personally responsible for the medical bills. Verify any contractor — including ours — before you sign.
