This isn't a cost. It's an investment.
The figures on this page are real and we don't hide them — that's how AE operates. But we want to be honest about how to read them. Your backyard design-build project isn't a line-item expense; it's an investment in your home's value, your family's daily experience, and a space you'll use for the next twenty to thirty years.
When you compare bids, compare what you're investing in — the spec, the crews, the warranty, the company that will still be standing in year ten — not just the price tag. The lowest bid is almost always the most expensive build over time.
How much does desert landscaping cost in Arizona?
Xeriscape isn't 'cheap landscape' — done right, it's a designed system of plants, DG, boulders, and drip irrigation that thrives without a lawn's water bill.
Educational estimate, not a quote. Ranges shown are Arizona-market planning estimates. Final pricing depends on site access, size, materials, engineering, drainage, utilities, permits, equipment access, existing conditions, and final scope. Binding pricing is only valid in a written proposal signed by an AE representative.
What drives cost
- Decomposed granite (DG) type and depth — 2" minimum on prepped and weed-fabricked base.
- Plant caliper — 5-gal vs 15-gal vs specimen agave/saguaro.
- Boulder count, size, and placement labor.
- Drip irrigation zones and controller (Rachio, Hunter Hydrawise, etc.).
- Path lighting or uplighting on specimen plants.
- Removal of existing lawn, tree stumps, or old rock.
Typical build breakdown (1,500 sq ft front yard)
- Demo + haul of existing lawn/rock: $1,500–$3,500.
- DG + weed fabric: $2,500–$4,500.
- Plants (mix of 5-gal and 15-gal, ~30 count): $2,000–$5,000.
- Boulders (6–10 pieces staged): $1,500–$4,000.
- Drip irrigation + smart controller: $1,800–$3,200.
- Optional low-voltage lighting: $1,500–$4,000.
